Dennis Allen will likely remain the head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2024, but other staff changes are anticipated. A well-known head coach who won a Super Bowl might sign with New Orleans in the offseason, citing a recent rumor.
If Jon Gruden is unable to find head coaching employment this offseason, the Saints may explore adding him, according to Nola.com. When the Saints traveled to Tampa Bay in Week 17 to play the Bucs, Gruden is said to have spent time with team officials. He even supposedly went to a team meeting and had dinner with general manager Mickey Loomis and other Saints employees.
According to Jeff Duncan, Gruden would probably blend in with the offensive staff rather than taking Pete Carmichael’s job as offensive coordinator. When it comes to possible adjustments to the offensive staff, Allen informed reporters on Monday that he and the Saints will “look at everything”.
This past season, Gruden assisted the Saints as a consultant since he knew former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who was moving to New Orleans. As the starting quarterback this season, Carr had a 9-8 record with 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions through the air. Over the last five games, he finished the 2023 season with an NFL-high 14 passing touchdowns.
Before taking on an advising position with the Saints, Gruden headed the Raiders for just over three years. He resigned from the position in October 2021, however, after it was discovered through stolen emails that he had used homophobic, sexist, and racial remarks. At a speech at Little Rock Touchdown Club in Arkansas in August of last year, Gruden stated he was “ashamed” of the words he used.
“I will only discuss honest matters here,” Gruden responded when questioned about his resignation. “I won’t offer any justifications for what transpired in these emails; I’m embarrassed about it. It is deplorable. But I think of myself as a good person. I attend church. I’ve spent thirty-one years married. I have three amazing boys. I still adore football. I think everyone in this room has made mistakes at some point, including myself. And I just beg your pardon, and maybe I’ll get another chance.”
Gruden is 117–112 as a head coach and was the Buccaneers’ 2003 Super Bowl XXXVII victor.
