The New York Jets almost missed catching a huge fish in free agency last year.
This time, quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have another wide receiver target when the Jets sign Odell Beckham Jr. in free agency, according to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz.
“Rodgers gets what he wants.” Schatz wrote about each team’s offseason plans in a column published on January 7. “And he wants more playmakers.” Thus, after Odell Beckham Jr.’s contract with the Ravens automatically voids, the Jets will sign him in free agency.
After this season, OBJ’s one-year, $15 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens will automatically expire, making him a free agent.
Gang Green put all on OBJ during the previous summer.
The gifted pass catcher was supposed to visit them, but it never happened. With its contract offer, Baltimore took the initiative and stopped him from boarding the aircraft.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN NFL Insider, the Jets presented Beckham Jr. a “very competitive” offer in 2023.
OBJ “probably should’ve been a Jet,” according to Fowler, given the state of negotiations between the parties.
“Odell wanted to play here,” Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner said, detailing how close it came to happening.
He was even choosing his jersey at that moment. “Hey, ask so-and-so if I can get the jersey [number I want,” he was saying to me. “He intended to don number seven,” Gardner informed Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr.
