In the final minutes of the Boston Celtics’ January 10 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jaylen Brown and Anthony Edwards faced off. Edwards did make a shot, but Brown was covering him and he turned the ball over three times, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
According to the YouTube channel of CLNS Media Boston Sports Network, Brown stated, “My whole thing was ‘not tonight.'” “We must stop him from doing to us what he has been doing to everyone else. particularly following the first game. We weren’t having it tonight, and I believe he won that first matchup against us. Take foolish shots, and see if we can convince a guy to turn him over. He still made some difficult ones, but I felt that as a team, we did a fantastic job on him. However, I was unquestionably the snake on top of that.
Edwards’ final field goal came at 6:34 in the fourth quarter, when he made a three-pointer to give the Timberwolves a six-point advantage. The fact that Brown mostly subdued Edwards contributed to the Celtics’ overtime victory.
Following the Celtics’ victory over the Timberwolves, Jayson Tatum gave Jaylen Brown credit for his ability to cover Edwards when it mattered most.
“(Brown) really just took the challenge,” Tatum said, per CLNS Media Boston Sports Network. “We’ve got a great memory. We remember playing those guys in Minnesota. We remember how it felt to lose that game and how the end of that game went. So we were really excited for this moment, and it was great to see JB take that challenge.”
Without Brown’s defense, Tatum’s season-high 45 points may have been all for naught. Both Tatum’s scoring and Brown’s defense played a pivotal role in how the Celtics came away with the win against the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
With Al Horford likely out against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 11, Brown and the Celtics will have another daunting challenge ahead when they face off against Giannis Antetokounmpo
Jayson Tatum wasn’t the only one who praised Jaylen Brown for his defensive efforts. Jrue Holiday also took note of how good Brown has been on that end overall.
