2024 threatened to be a challenging summer for Chelsea before the Blues cut ties with nearly all the senior players on expiring deals.
Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Cesar Azpilicueta were gone, raising a substantial amount of money and lightening the workload during the course of the ensuing year of contract negotiations.
But before this summer ends, there are still three difficult choices to be made.
Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva, a 39-year-old center back, is the only player in Mauricio Pochettino’s senior squad who poses a flight risk due to his age.
Father Time waits for no man, and there have been clear signs that the Brazilian is no longer the defender he once was, even though Silva’s expertise is invaluable in a team severely short in experience.
Since joining the team in 2020, he has been a devoted and excellent servant. However, with so many talented young center backs available, it’s time for Chelsea to politely say goodbye this summer.
