Victor Wembanyama made a bold remark last Thursday after the team’s heart-stopping loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, saying that every game from now on is a “statement.” The rookie didn’t just talk the talk; he backed it up with a historic performance Wednesday night in Detroit, collecting his first career triple-double in only 21 minutes on the court.
With this outstanding feat, he becomes the tallest player to record a triple-double with assists and the youngest big man to record a triple-double. The rookie put on an amazing show of talents as the Spurs deliberately played their offense through him. Wembanyama occasionally played the position of point guard and made some incredible passes. One particularly notable one was Jeremy Sohan’s full-court dime following his grab of a rebound
Even though that play was amazing, Wembanyama highlighted his best pass, which was a between-the-legs pass to Julian Champagnie, which astounded everyone.
It appears from his recent performances that the Spurs have turned the corner and are starting to learn how to play with Victor. Wemby’s range of passes allowed the side to move better off the ball and create easier scoring opportunities.
It makes sense to anticipate that Wembanyama will continue to be a focal point of the offense while he is on the court. Wednesday’s triple-double was not an anomaly; anticipate more performances of similar caliber from the youngster. The only unanswered question is: will blocks or assists be the source of his next triple-double?
Victor discussed the minute restriction at his press conference following the game. The youngster was excited to play more minutes and mentioned how fantastic his body feels. He also said he wouldn’t be shocked if the limitation was lifted sooner rather than later.
He has played incredibly well over the last six games despite these limitations. Imagine what he could accomplish if he played for thirty to thirty-five minutes per game.
