Days after a heroic performance against European contenders Aston Villa, Boro were deserved victors over Chelsea in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Saturday, before taking all three points in a 3-1 comeback triumph against Joe Edwards’ Millwall team.
It is not surprising that the head coach of the Teessiders has been the subject of a lot of recent discussion, given that he has carried on the team’s success this season after losing in the play-off semifinals the previous year.
Speaking exclusively to FLW, Carlton Palmer expressed his belief that he will soon be managing in the top division, citing his previous performances as more evidence of his growing value in the dugout.
“Reports are circulating that Michael Carrick is set to leave Middlesbrough at the end of the season should they not achieve promotion,” Palmer said.
“In his first season, Carrick moved Middlesbrough from the relegation zone to the play-offs. He has done an incredible job.” They are now just one point outside of the top six despite a challenging start to the season and minimal activity in the transfer market.
“Thus, it goes without saying that Michael Carrick’s name will be brought up for positions in higher leagues like the Premier League. He has long been admired by Crystal Palace, and it seems like Roy Hodgson’s tenure as Palace manager is coming to an end.”
Although the chance to work in the Premier League would be appealing, the commentator thinks Carrick is not in a rush right now.
He doesn’t seem to be in a rush to leave Middlesbrough right now, in my opinion. If he received guarantees during the transfer window, I believe he would be eager to try and help them get promoted.
“I certainly see Carrick going on and being a very successful manager in the Premier League at some point,” he said.
Michael Carrick linked with Crystal Palace job
FootballTransfers, which disclosed that the Palace leadership had the former England player high on their shortlist to replace Hodgson at the conclusion of the season, provided the links Palmer mentioned.
The claim continues by saying that when Patrick Vieira was fired at Selhurst Park in March, the Eagles were likewise not given authorization to talk with Carrick. Roy Hodgson is purportedly collaborating with Steve Parish to identify a potential replacement.
For the first time in his career, Carrick is reportedly thrilled about the idea of managing in the Premier League, but this chance depends on if the Geordie can get Boro back to the top division following a seven-year absence.
Michael Carrick’s managerial potential
In just 15 months since taking over as head coach for the first time, Carrick has shown that he is capable of competing at the highest level at the Riverside.
He has incorporated the detailed game-plans that Middlesbrough plays, as seen by their performance against Chelsea, into his own mentality on the field. He has learned from the greatest managers in history, both as a player and coach, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho.
The 42-year-old has also demonstrated remarkable man-management abilities. This was especially evident in the early going of the current season, when Boro was winless in the league until September 23rd, as he kept an optimistic attitude on his club, which has since been apparent.
For the benefit of Middlesbrough supporters, perhaps Carrick will coach the team in the Premier League soon, but it’s possible that they could be able to lure him away from the North East.
