Taking a page from the Serbian basketball legend’s playbook, Toronto Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic, who is grieving, dedicated the team’s victory on Wednesday to his late buddy Dejan Milojevic.
Golden State Warriors assistant coach Milojevic passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 46 after suffering a heart attack during a team meal in Salt Lake City on Tuesday.
In his first season as head coach of the Raptors, Rajakovic, a longtime NBA assistant, spoke about his friend Deki’s passing during Wednesday’s 121-97 victory, which started with Toronto running one of Milojevic’s in-bounds plays.
“I told my guys I loved them,” Rajakovic said to reporters on Wednesday, his eyes welling up.
“Deki, my friend, used an ATO [after timeout play] on the first play of the game,” Rajakovic remarked. “I picked up that play from him, and that’s what he brought to Golden State and the NBA.” He gave that play to me.
