Slow Updates: Osimhen, Blackpool, Saudi Arabia, Barcelona, and Xavi
NAPOLI’s Victor Osimhen appears to be the next major transfer in European football, but he will have to leave the Serie A champions. There will be no shortage of suitors for last season’s Serie A top scorer. Saudi Arabia will undoubtedly try to entice the 24-year-old Nigerian to the Middle East, but Napoli’s owner, Aurelio de Laurentiis, dismissed a € 200 million deal, claiming it would acquire only one foot of the club’s star striker. Chelsea, Newcastle, and Manchester United are all interested in signing Osimhen, and there have been preliminary talks. According to newspaper reports, Chelsea offered £ 120 million, which is comparable to Transfermarkt, Football Benchmark, and CIES Football valuations.
Blackpool owner Simon Sadler has come under fire from some Tangerines fans for his financial commitment to the team. Following the conclusion of the infamous Owen Oyston’s reign at Bloomfield Road, he purchased 96% of the club from receivers in 2019. He claims to have contributed £18 million of his own money and plans to invest another £5 million in 2023-24. “It is this level of dedication that keeps Blackpool Football Club running.” It has given us a potential top-six playing budget and allowed us to pay for Kyle Joseph, the highest transfer fee in League One this year,” he explained. Sadler also stated that player trading and reinvesting proceeds from player sales back into the squad are important.
The European Club Association’s general meeting is currently taking place in Berlin, and there are obviously some concerns about Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a transfer market force. Some teams are concerned about the danger of non-payment related to the massive transfer fees owing to European clubs by Saudi clubs, despite the fact that some of the most active are owned by the state’s sovereign wealth fund. The Saudi Pro League accounted for 11% of summer spending, totaling £ 750 million, including the € 93 million paid to PSG to sign Neymar. The ECA chairman, PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi, attempted to reassure members amid concerns that the Saudi league’s spending habits could harm European football. Saudi Arabia,
Barcelona’s reset under Xavi has been successful, but it has resulted in a slew of departures. Only about eight have survived the cull, if that’s the correct term, yet Barcelona won La Liga by a good margin in 2023 while conceding only 20 goals, so they’re doing something right. Barcelona’s financial fair play (FFP) issues are well known, thus they have had to be market savvy.
They just signed loan players Joo Félix and Joo Cancelo from Atlético Madrid and Manchester City, respectively. Xavi is expected to sign a new deal with the club, extending his tenure as Barcelona’s coach until 2023. The existing agreement will end in 2024, but it may be modified by FFP. Barcelona has three victories and a draw to start the season, but they are playing in front of significantly fewer supporters at their temporary home, the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, while the Camp Nou is being renovated. The current capacity for their home games is little under 40,000.
