Sad News:He won’t be playing for Calgary Flames any longer

This particular reporter was being (gently) reprimanded by Calgary Flames executive Craig Conroy two years ago after Elias Lindholm placed second in the Selke Trophy voting. Conroy felt that the journalists had cast their votes for the incorrect person.

He maintained that Lindholm was the NHL’s top defensive forward that season, with all due respect to Patrice Bergeron. He still holds the same position.

The key point is that Lindholm has a lot of admirers in Conroy, who was a dependable two-way center in his playing days and is currently the general manager of the Saddledome. That didn’t stop him from trading him away on Wednesday.

This most recent deal is the best indication yet that Conroy is sincere about revamping the Flames’ squad. Lindholm was traded to the rival Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a sizable haul that included winger Andrei Kuzmenko, defense prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, and two draft picks, including a first-round pick this summer. Lindholm was scheduled to represent the Calgary-based squad at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game this week.
