What is ahead for the Patriots and Jerod Mayo?

Jerod Mayo has a ton of work to do this offseason.

The new Patriots head coach has already made three big decisions when he hired offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington, and special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer last week. The next order of business will be putting together the rest of his coaching staff.

After that, Mayo and the Patriots need to figure out what their biggest needs are and how to address them this offseason.

After Super Bowl LVIII, the process starts to ramp up. NFL teams can start to franchise tag players on Feb. 20. The next week, on Feb. 27, marks the start of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The deadline to extend the franchise tag is March 5. Then, the Patriots will enter free agency on March 13.

At this moment, the team has the third most cap space with $66 million available to spend, according to Overthecap. That number could increase with other roster moves.

Before you know it, it’ll be April. Since Mayo is a new head coach, the Patriots can begin their offseason workout program early on April 1. Teams with returning head coaches start on April 15. That month ends with the Patriots holding the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which runs from April 25-27.

Over the next two weeks, MassLive will take an in-depth look at the Patriots roster. We’ll analyze each position group, looking at how the team performed in 2023 and where it might be heading in the future.

Stay tuned as we’ll have you prepared for one of the most important offseasons in Patriots franchise history.
