Jaiyden Hunt, a recruit for the Brisbane Broncos, is anxiously awaiting scans on his damaged ankle to find out how long he will be out.
Given the number of outs the Broncos have had since the end of 2023, the forward, who switched from the St. George Illawarra Dragons during the off-season, would have been in the running for a bench spot at Red Hill. However, after receiving assistance from teammates and medical staff during training on Wednesday, it is unlikely that he will be ready for the season opener.
After losing Keenan Palasia, who could play both positions off Kevin Walters’ bench in 2023, the 25-year-old, who can play on the edge or in the middle, is expected to provide the Broncos more versatility. The Broncos have not yet commented or provided an update on the player.
Out of the forward group that advanced to the 2023 grand final, the Broncos also lost Thomas Flegler to the Dolphins and Kurt Capewell to the New Zealand Warriors.
Hunt made his debut for the Dragons on a train and trial deal during the 2021 season, but he has only played 14 NRL games thus far and is finding it difficult to establish a consistent spot in the starting lineup.
Having said that, he played in seven of those games during his finest season to date last year. With a new beginning, he hopes to establish himself as a major player in the NRL after making an impression during his reserve grade career.
Better news for the Broncos: Adam Reynolds, who suffered an ankle injury last week, is back to full training.
The seasoned halfback appeared to be in danger of missing the season opener at one point, but scans revealed only a sprain. After a week off, he is now returning to full fitness ahead of the season, though it is likely that he will miss the Broncos’ two trials as they play the Cowboys and Sea Eagles before traveling to Las Vegas to play the Sydney Roosters.
