The Boston Celtics have already acquired Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies on the eve of the NBA trade deadline. He will round out the team’s center rotation.
And after reportedly sending Lamar Stevens out as part of the trade, they still have an open roster spot to fill. Masslive’s Brian Robb has reported the franchise will likely remain active in the trade market.
The Celtics have recently been linked with Kris Dunn and Lonnie Walker IV. Both of those players would provide depth at the guard position. Walker IV could also slide up to play some undersized small forward, too.
Since moving into a front office role, Stevens has been highly successful in the trade market. Almost every deal he’s made has worked out well thus far, and the results have shown up on the court this year.
With major contributions from newcomers Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, Boston boasts the best record in the NBA. They have a top-three offense and defense. They’re arguably the most talented team in the league this season.
Of course, the Tillman move and any subsequent trade are will likely be viewed as upgrades designed to provide injury insurance for the primary rotation. But there’s good reason to add depth behind the team’s elite top six, particularly Porzingis and Al Horford.
Adding more depth toward the back end of their roster will give Boston the best chance of managing an injury to a key contributor.
Ultimately, Stevens is making moves to position his team as champions-elect. Then he’ll have to rely on Joe Mazzulla to get the best out of his players
