Yankees new player seen in their jersey

As spring training approaches, former Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves reliever Lucas Luetge has inked a deal with the Boston Red Sox.

To put it mildly, the 36-year-old’s career arc has been intriguing. He pitched for the Mariners in the major leagues every year from 2012 to 2015 after making his main league debut with them in 2012. After that, he barely had an appearance in the major leagues until making a comeback with the Yankees in 2021. After remaining in New York through 2022, he played in 12 games for the Braves in 2023.

With the exception of one career start, Luetge has pitched in 230 games as a reliever. He is 12-11 with a 3.60 ERA in his career.

The terms of the deal with Boston are now undisclosed, although it’s most likely a minor league agreement. Even though it is anticipated that the Red Sox would finish last in the American League East, building the roster will be difficult.

Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, and Lucas Giolito are expected to be Boston’s starting rotation players. Tanner Houck, Josh Wincowski, Garrett Whitlock, and Kutter Crawford are the other contenders after that. The two that miss out on rotation positions will probably join John Schreiber in the bullpen, where they will face off against Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen.
