This offseason, the New York Jets will alter their roster in a few ways.
Hunter Henry, the tight end for the New England Patriots, has the green and white as his favored landing location, according to Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus.
Spielberger said, “It appears the New York Jets will let go of tight end C.J. Uzomah this offseason. Henry will be joining Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert in a one-for-one trade.” Aaron Rodgers will go a long way toward improving the New York Redskins’ dismal red-zone touchdown percentage from 2023, but he also gets a big-bodied target here for money downs.
PFF predicts that this offseason, Henry will get a $12.25 million, two-year contract through free agency. According to Over The Cap, he would rank No. 20 among the highest-paid tight ends in football with the $6.13 million yearly compensation.
This offseason, the green and white are anticipated to sever their connection with Uzomah. He is about to enter the last year of a $24 million deal. Even so, there is an out this offseason in his contract with the Jets.
Gang Green would save up about $5.3 million in cap space if they decided to let go of Uzomah. A $5.9 million dead cap penalty would also need to be swallowed by the team.
That would leave just Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert as significant players on the roster, leaving the Jets without a tight end.
The 29-year-old Henry has been a very dependable player since joining the league in 2016. Henry has hauled in 38 touchdowns and recorded 329 receptions for 3,853 receiving yards throughout that time.
Following their failure with Uzomah, the Jets will search for a reliable free agent to sign. Spielberger referred to Henry as a “known commodity” and a “high-floor veteran.”
The Jets might use a tight end to take Uzomah’s place if they decide to let him go. From that angle, there is reasoning behind this action. But the icing on the cake is that you’re simultaneously filling a void and skunking an opponent.
Throughout his three seasons in the AFC East, Henry has been a Jet killer. By bringing him in, the Jets might directly hurt a division foe while also helping themselves.
