As the long-awaited new stadium for the Hatters gets closer, Luton chief executive Gary Sweet has confirmed the team will be able to begin “moving earth” at Power Court in the coming months.
Town has been waiting to start groundworks on the site, which include the fairly large task of moving a power sub-station and also opening up the River Lea, since they received planning permission for the ground back in January 2019. They have also revised their initial plans and opted to boost the capacity as well after achieving promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs back in May.
As Sweet noted in his programme notes prior to Saturday’s match against Sheffield United, “With football looking to repair itself, we can push forward with more confidence than ever on other matters, such as Power Court,” it now seems that the club can start moving forward with getting the site ready. Some of our supporters might have seen yesterday that we filed a standard planning application for the site’s groundworks, which will allow us to start moving earth in the coming months.
“This encouraging milestone follows the receipt by UKPN of a definitive programme to move the sub-station. This crucial project will commence next month, enabling us to synchronise our schedules for comprehensive stadium planning and construction programme planning. As the time for comprehensive planning approaches, more information on the renovated stadium itself will become available.
