The performance of one of the division’s most peculiar central midfield combinations will be largely responsible for Luton’s survival if they manage to avoid relegation in their inaugural top-flight campaign.
When the window opened last summer, very few people would have predicted that in September, Edwards would be fielding Ross Barkley and Albert Sambi Lokonga in the middle of the park. Arsenal’s £15 million forgotten man would be joining an England international on loan at Kenilworth Road, effectively turning back the clock as Barkley’s career began to fade.
Barkley is able to get forward and cause havoc in the last third of the game because of Lokonga’s aggressiveness and discipline, but the Belgium international can still contribute to the offensive side of the game.
“I cherish him.” He is incredible. He’s a really good player, in my opinion,” Edwards says to Luton. Lokonga is providing assists in today’s decisive victories over Sheffield United and Brighton. Upon leaving the training field, I said to him, “God, you’re such a player; I love watching you play.” He’s excellent. He is fantastic for us.
“A very remarkable individual. incredibly gifted, extremely modest, incredibly hardworking, extremely tactically astute, in the right location at the right time to control a game, and adept at taking the ball under duress. Now he’s also giving us one last chance.
