Sad News; He won’t be playing for Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames dealt Elias Lindholm to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko.

In addition, Calgary was given Vancouver’s first-round pick, a conditional fourth-round selection, and the defensive prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo for the 2024 NHL Draft.

In 49 games this season for the Flames, Lindholm recorded 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists), marking his sixth season in Calgary. At this Saturday’s (3 p.m. ET; ABC, ESPN+, SN, CBC, TVAS) Honda (U.S.)/Rogers (Canada) NHL All-Star Game in Toronto, he will join forwards Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller, and Elias Pettersson, defender Quinn Hughes, and goalkeeper Thatcher Demko as the sixth player from Vancouver. For Lindholm, it will be her first All-Star Game.

“I had a great time in Calgary, loved my time there and (have) a lot of good memories,” Lindholm said at 2024 NHL All-Star Media Day on Thursday. “To join Vancouver, one of the best teams in the League right now, with so many good players, goaltending, defensemen. I’m super excited and can’t wait to get started.”

Selected by the Hurricanes with the No. 5 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, Lindholm has 545 points (212 goals, 333 assists) in 792 regular-season games with the Flames and Carolina Hurricanes, and 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 27 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The 29-year-old center, who can become an unrestricted free agent after this season, said he heard about the trade when he was coming back from vacation.

“Obviously it’s easier to get traded during the summer, but I was prepared for anything,” Lindholm said. “Didn’t expect to be traded in the air back from Mexico, but I’m super excited to join this team and pumped to get going and start on a road trip. It’ll be fun.
