Journalist moots bidding war to sign Everton star

Tottenham will be primed for a bidding war for Everton ace Jarrad Branthwaite with Manchester United also ready to battle for his signature, Ben Jacobs has said.

Centre-back Branthwaite, 21, is seemingly a man in demand for the summer transfer window with Real Madrid having been previously registered with an interest.

Journalist Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport (18 February), fully expects Spurs to be involved in the battle but acknowledged there is plenty of competition for the youngster’s signature.

I think that there is going to be a bidding war, in many ways, during the summer. I think Tottenham will be there, and we know that Real Madrid have looked in the past as well,” Jacobs said.

“It is true that bringing in at least one young centre-back is on Manchester United’s positional radar. Homegrown players are also a key focus, so Branthwaite ticks a lot of boxes, especially with him being a left-sided centre-back.”

It was reported by the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards earlier this month that Everton have placed a £100million price tag on Branthwaite’s head this summer.

A lot of Everton supporters will be asking ‘how much for this other leg?’ He has been simply exceptional for the Toffees this season and it surely won’t be long until full England recognition will be received.

Once that happens there will be an even bigger premium on the 21-year-old’s head. It seems like Everton will face a huge battle to keep hold of their prized asset this summer.

If he does have to go then there is the added benefit of several clubs being interested in his signature, something that will play into Everton’s hands and drive Branthwaite’s price up even further.

The best case scenario, of course, is that Everton keep hold of Branthwaite for the foreseeable future. If that can’t happen then it is about getting the best price possible.
