The Green Bay Packers aren’t out of the woods just yet; Aaron Rodgers’ contract expires in 2024. Even without any more roster reductions in 2024, the organization already possesses almost $15 million in dead money. If David Bakhtiari is freed, that amount will rise by about $19 million.
The Packers have a lot more options, but it seems like the NFL has made things much simpler for them.
According to numerous estimates, including the most recent Spotrac data, the NFL salary cap in 2024 will be $242.5 million. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk asserts that the possibility exists that it is far higher.
“There is another reliable source that indicates the amount will be more like $250 million than $243 million,” Florio writes.
The Packers would benefit from an addition of $4–7 million, particularly if they were planning for a cap of approximately $243 million. Green Bay would have greater free agency flexibility and wouldn’t need to make as many moves to stay under the cap.
It might also mean that Preston Smith and Aaron Jones don’t need to rework their contracts, which would make keeping them much easier.
We’re getting close to the final salary cap numbers for 2024. As the Packers continue to overcome numerous salary limit roadblocks, anything near $250 million would make the offseason work a little more pleasant for Brian Gutekunst and Russ Ball.
The Packers had genuine interest in signing a big contract with outstanding running back Jonathan Taylor last season, in addition to making a trade for him. If the proper player becomes available this off-season, the Packers probably won’t hesitate to reallocate funds.
Gaining an additional $7 million in capital might be a significant step toward achieving that goal.
