David Wagner is confident that injuries sustained by Norwich City duo Marcelino Nunez and Grant Hanley during their 1-1 draw against Blackburn won’t prove to be serious.
The Canaries lost the Chilean with what looked like a hamstring injury in the dying stages of the clash at Ewood Park, whilst captain Hanley signalled to come off before full-time.
Given Nunez’s recent form and Hanley’s comeback from a serious Achilles injury, both situations were met with concern – but the City boss is confident that neither will prove to be serious.
“It looks like a knock,” Wagner said on Nunez. “He got a knock in training yesterday, but they have to make some further investigations and treatments – then we will know more.
“Nunez, because of his English and Spanish, we have to look further. We have to see what the outcome is in the next couple of days.
“Grant got a knock on his shin, and his pain was then too big that he was not able to continue, but I don’t think it is something serious.”
Wagner also took the decision to leave experienced striker Ashley Barnes on the bench in Lancashire and mentioned some fatigue for the 34-year-old at his pre-match press conference.
Nunez’s form was another factor in Barnes’ omission from the starting line-up, as Wagner turns his attentions to another big game against Sunderland at Carrow Road next weekend.
“Barnesy has done great the last week with his three starts in the last week,” he said. “Now there is a decision to make.
“I wanted to have Marcelino in the starting XI, and this meant that, in this game, Barnesy was not able to start, but it could be totally different against Sunderland again.”
