The altercation between Jack Robinson and Vini Souza, teammates at Sheffield United, occurred after Pedro Neto’s shot for Wolves curled wide of the goal, which many fans had missed.
However, following a review by Jarred Gillett, the video assistant referee (VAR), the incident very well could have resulted in one or both being sent off.
Most supporters may not have known that offenses against teammates as well as opponents are considered violent behavior, which in football carries a three-match penalty and an automatic red card.
The majority of fans would never have seen an incidence of “blue on blue”—or, in this case, stripes on stripes—violence since it happens so infrequently.
But Sheffield United may have been left with just nine players if Gillett had decided that Robinson, Souza, or both had engaged in violent behavior.
What took place?
The exact reason behind the argument that escalated into pushing and what seemed to be slaps or even punches will only be known by the long-serving Robinson and Souza, the 24-year-old Brazilian who joined the team from Lommel in the summer. However, cameras captured the two having a heated conversation a few minutes before the fight.
