Bad News;Everton to face second charge after point deduction

Everton ‘expects’ to be penalized additional points if a decision is made about their second allegation of violating Premier League regulations, according to reports.

On the field, Everton has exceeded expectations this season. Prior to the start of the season, many had predicted that they would be relegated, but if it weren’t for their points deduction, they would be in the middle of the league.

But Everton’s season has fallen apart due to off-field issues. An independent commission confirmed in November 2023 that the Merseyside club had been punished ten points for violating a Profit and Sustainability regulation of the Premier League.

Rules state that Premier League teams are only allowed to lose a maximum of £105m over three years but Everton were found to have lost £19.5m when submitting their accounts for the 2021/22 season.

After Everton filed an appeal against this decision, it was revealed on Monday that the original ten-point deduction had been lowered to six. They are now five points above the bottom three in the Premier League after this move, which puts them in 15th place.

Everton released the following statement in response to the ruling: “We are pleased that our appeal has reduced the points sentence, even though the club is still processing the appeal board’s ruling.

“We understand that the appeal board determined that the initial 10-point deduction was improper when compared to the benchmarks that the club informed the commission were available, such as the position under the applicable EFL regulations and the nine-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event that of insolvency.

“The club is also particularly pleased with the appeal board’s decision to overturn the original commission’s finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith.

“That decision, along with reducing the points deduction, was an incredibly important point of principle for the club on appeal. The club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal.”

Everton are not completely out of the woods yet, though. They have another charge hanging over their heads as they have been accused of the same offence for their 2022/23 accounts.
