February 29-The Colorado Avalanche will visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday in an attempt to maintain momentum in the race for the top slot in the Central Division.
By defeating the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Tuesday, the Avalanche improved their position in the division lead, now trailing only the Stars and Winnipeg Jets by two points.
“We’ve talked about our preferred finish line and why,” Colorado head coach Jared Bednar stated. “How significant is it? I’m not sure. Depending on what needs to be done to get there, yes.

Towards the end, the team will need to play with greater consistency. They haven’t won more than two games in a run since winning three straight from January 20–26, despite winning three of their last five games (3–1). Since then, they’ve gone 4-5-2.
Even though the Avalanche have been a dominant team at home, their road record of 13-13-5 is mediocre. Of the upcoming nine games, six will be away from home.
With a goal and an assist against Dallas, Nathan MacKinnon, who has been playing at a lightning-fast pace all season, increased his point streak to seven games. With 35 goals and 63 assists, he now has 98 points, which is seven more than Edmonton Oilers captain and the second-most in the NHL behind Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov.

With 61 points (23 goals and 38 assists) in 29 games, MacKinnon’s amazing home point streak has accounted for the majority of his offensive output. His success at rival rinks has been much different, though; in 31 games, he has led the Avalanche with 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists).
“I just think it’s the consistency that he’s playing with on a nightly basis,” Bednar stated. “And I’ll say this, he was incredible (against Dallas).”
