Five Fulham players to represent South American nations

After Andreas Pereira was called up to the Brazil national team, Jack Stroudley examines previous South Americans who have represented their nation and Fulham on the field.

We found out on Friday night that Andreas Pereira had been called up for a second time from Brazil. While we wait for “Money Muniz” to solidify himself as the next R9, here are a few other South Americans who played for Fulham and also represented their country.

The midfielder would become the first player to receive a call-up to the Selecao while he was at Fulham. This got me thinking about our other South American contingent and which of those were lucky enough to don their nation’s colours. Before anyone queries the whereabouts of Bryan Ruiz: Costa Rica is located in Central

Let’s start with the most apparent name: Willian, another member of our samba contingent. He played for Chelsea from 2011 to 2019, during which time he was an important player of the Brazil team. During that span, he made 70 appearances and scored nine goals. He played in two World Cups and three Copa Americas during his career for Brazil; he won the final one in 2019 after being called up in the last minute to replace an injured Neymar.

Although Willian hasn’t formally declared his retirement from international football, he has acknowledged in previous interviews that it is highly unlikely he will play again given Brazil’s superiority in those broad areas.
