Breaking; He is the first British South Asian to referee in the Premier League

Referee Sunny Singh Gill will make history on Saturday when Luton plays Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Gill is the first British South Asian to officiate a top flight match.

The 39-year-old joins Sam Allison, Sam Barrott, Bobby Madley, Josh Smith, Rebecca Welch, and Lewis Smith as the eighth referee not part of PGMOL’s (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) Select Group to officiate a Premier League game this season. Singh Gill has played in 36 matches so far this season, ranging from League Two to the Championship. He has received 133 yellow cards and six red ones, with two of those coming during MK Dons’ victory against AFC Wimbledon in January.

Before being expedited into the Football League, he officiated his first professional game in October 2020, a National League match between Sutton United and Maidenhead. He spent two seasons at that level. Tim Robinson is the fourth official, and Eddie Smart and Nick Greenhalgh will be Singh Gill’s assistants on the day. Peter Bankes is in charge of VAR, while Mat Wilkes is his assistant.
