Raiders Linked to Big-Name RB as Possible Josh Jacobs Replacement

Running back Josh Jacobs will have an opportunity to experience free agency for the first time in his career. He may return even though the Los Vegas Raiders chose not to use the franchise tag on him.

Although the Raiders still have the option to re-sign Jacobs, they have given the other thirty-one teams the opportunity to make him a better offer. If the organization chooses not to re-sign Jacobs, Las Vegas is reportedly pursuing another well-known running back. The Raiders are one of the clubs that might be interested in New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

As per Leonard’s March 5 piece, “sources view the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and Las Vegas Raiders as some primary potential suitors who have the resources, need, and interest to possibly sign Saquon Barkley.”

Like Jacobs, Barkley was a franchise tag player for the previous season, but he will now have the opportunity to test free agency. The 27-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowl player. If the Giants don’t sign him, a lot of teams will be interested in him. It’s hard to see, though, why the Raiders would go after him.

Why Would Las Vegas Raiders Sign Saquon Barkley Over Josh Jacobs?

Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley are likely to receive similar contracts this offseason. Both are young former first-round picks who have been to multiple Pro Bowls. Barkley’s a bit better in the passing game while Jacobs is a better pure rusher.

That’s exactly why it wouldn’t make much sense for the Raiders to pursue Barkley. They already know Jacobs and know what he brings to the team. He’s been a team captain and has played through injuries. He also has expressed that he wants to be back.
