Lewis Hamilton is having a great time in his last season as a Mercedes driver before making the fantastical transfer to Ferrari in 2025.
Readers of Express Sport believe Mercedes should start concentrating more on George Russell during the 2024 season rather than Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion still has 22 Grands Prix left with the Silver Arrows before joining Ferrari at the end of the season.
Given that Hamilton has already committed to drive for Ferrari through 2025, Mercedes will eventually move away from the W15 in their development, and the 39-year-old will begin to be barred from some team meetings as the Maranello-bound driver is denied access to sensitive information.
Max Verstappen provided an explanation of this last month. “I mean for sure he has a great relationship with everyone and especially also with Toto [Wolff],” he said to the media, including Express Sport.
But at one time, he also knows that Toto would tell him, “I’m really sorry, we’ve had all this success, but you can’t be a part of certain meetings any more.” Toto will definitely tell him this. It’s probably a little strange, but that’s common in Formula One, and you’re a professional enough to handle it.
In response to a survey of 7,057 Express Sport readers, 64% of respondents said that Toto Wolff should give Russell priority for the remainder of the 2024 season, while only 36% thought that the long-serving star driver should receive the same treatment as or better in his last year with the Brackley-based team.
Wolff, the team’s principal, puts a lot of faith in Russell and believes the 26-year-old will lead the Silver Arrows in the future. At the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix, Russell secured Mercedes’ lone victory of the ground-effect era. He has since proven his worth in the cockpit when it comes to driver input and strategy decisions.
