This summer, the Minnesota Vikings have seen a number of players come and depart. Harrison Smith, a veteran safety with 12 years of experience, is one player who is here to stay.
With a $19.2 million cap cost in 2024, the six-time Pro Bowler was scheduled to begin the third year of his four-year, $64 million contract. That was prior to a revised deal being agreed to by Smith and the Vikings.
On March 13, the crew shared “THE HITMAN” on X, the former Twitter. “A deal that keeps @HarriSmith22 with the Vikings has been reached.”
According to his agency @AthletesFirst, Harrison Smith’s new contract is for $9 million, as Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said on X on March 13. A bit more Hitman for Minnesota and some cap relief for the Vikings
The 35-year-old Smith made the third-most stops of his career with 93 last season. He also had 3.0 sacks and three forced fumbles, adding three pass deflections for good measure.
He also played his first full slate of games in three seasons.
Smith has battled injuries throughout his career, missing games in six of his 12 seasons. There were some questions about whether or not he would return for his 13th NFL season or opt for retirement following his comments to end the season.
Smith smirked and replied, “Whenever I retire, I’m not going to tell you,” as reported by Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune on January 8. You’ll manage to solve it. I will say this: It is difficult to be able to play and not want to play. Not trying to be foreboding or anything, but see what that brings you. My shoulder hurts right now.
This kind of behavior was always anticipated for this offseason. And although there was some doubt about Smith’s comeback, it is encouraging for the Vikings.
