The 49ers are still securing defensive depth. Following the loss of linebacker Oren Burks in free agency and the acquisition of cornerback Isaiah Oliver by the Jets, San Francisco re-signed reserve linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and added former Saints cornerback Isaac Yiadom.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN brings us the Yiadom news. Though with different outcomes, Yiadom contributed to the Saints’ defense in a manner akin to Oliver’s during the 49ers’ previous campaign. Pro Football Focus (subscription required) reports that both players graded out exceptionally high in coverage, but Yiadom performed far better in run defense. Additionally, Yiadom saw increased coverage tests, and he performed admirably, recording an astounding 14 passes defensed.
Following a season in which PFF ranked Yiadom as the league’s 10th-best cornerback, the 49ers added another gifted corner to their roster. According to Fowler, Yiadom visited the Commanders yesterday in order to consider his options. In the end, though, the 27-year-old decided to join one of the top defenses from the previous season rather than assist in rebuilding one of the worst.
Josh Alper of NBC Sports reports that Flannigan-Fowles will make a comeback on a new, one-year contract. Throughout his four years with the 49ers, Flannigan-Fowles has essentially played the same job. Flannigan-Fowles is primarily a special teams player, although he does see the field about 13% of the time. With another season in San Francisco, though, the 27-year-old may be able to carve out a bit more playing time. As of right now, Burks is a free agent, not signed to return for 2024. If that holds true and the 49ers fail to make any other additions, Flannigan-Fowles could find his way into Burks’ role next season.
