OKC Thunder: Former Hornet Star Settling Into Bench Role

The Oklahoma City Thunder looked impressive at the deadline, and things are starting to click.

The Thunder signed Gordon Hayward from the Charlotte Hornets in an attempt to bolster their bench scoring power.

The Thunder’s new rotational player is getting used to his new role, despite not having the same impact as he did in Charlotte. With the Thunder, Hayward has averaged 4.3 points per 17 minutes in 13 games.

Although it is less than the 14.5 points per game he was averaging as a starter prior to his injury in December, he is still valuable to the Thunder.

Although a significant drop in stats like this usually would raise red flags, Hayward’s willingness to accept a smaller role and blend in with the squad is evident. He is shooting 8.3 less times a game with Oklahoma City, so maybe pushing a few more shots would be beneficial, but his strategy has helped the Thunder keep winning.

Hayward, who started one game for the Thunder, has been a dependable role player. As an additional ball handler, he can generate his shot and offer value, albeit he hasn’t demonstrated it much since the deal.

He scored ten points in a close victory in Portland during his finest game with the Thunder. Hayward is becoming more and more adept at finding a rhythm as his minutes continue to rise. Furthermore, with the Thunder gearing up for a postseason push, such outings might swing a game or two in April and May.

Oklahoma City has a wide range of bench selections to choose from. However, Hayward’s skill set is adequate for practically any situation the team faces.

As the oldest and most experienced player on the roster, the 6-foot-7 forward has brought the type of veteran presence the Thunder have missed this season.

Hayward might not get back to his Charlotte form and leave after the season, but the potential impact he could have on a playoff run is something to be excited about.
