The New York Mets and veteran designated hitter J.D. Martinez have reached a $12 million agreement, as reported by Jon Heyman.
Martinez, 36, is a well-known player who was a member of the Dodgers, Astros, Tigers, Diamondbacks, and Red Sox. A six-time All-Star, his 2018 World Series victory with the Red Sox was a major career high point. His statistics from the previous Dodger season were impressive: 33 home runs, 103 RBIs, 61 runs scored in 113 games, a batting average of.271, an on-base percentage of.321, and a slugging percentage of.572.
Last season, Martinez’s comeback to form with respect to home runs was noteworthy. He hit 16 home runs in 2022, but with 33 last season, he more than doubled that total and improved his slugging percentage. His power comeback suggests he could follow in the footsteps of previous successful designated hitters like David Ortiz and Nelson Cruz, who both continued to play well into their late 30s, even though it’s unlikely he’ll match his.330 hitting average from 2018.
Martinez is anticipated to keep having a big influence on the starting lineup given his recent power outburst.
