The Washington Commanders are currently in a situation where having options is never a bad thing.
According to ESPN (via Bleacher Report), the Commanders have been contacted numerous times over the No. 2 overall selection. Although Washington hasn’t decided yet, it’s expected to retain the selection and choose between LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, according to the source.
The New England Patriots are one glaring obstacle that makes moving out of the No. 2 overall pick challenging. Similar to Washington, New England has the third overall pick and is currently targeting a quarterback in the draft. Quarterbacks are apparently of interest to the New York Giants as well, who presently have the sixth overall pick.
With the first overall pick, the Chicago Bears are also looking for a quarterback. In the event that USC quarterback Caleb Williams is chosen, the Commanders will have a choice between Daniels and Maye.
The fifth-pick holders, the Chargers, may be a trade candidate for Washington. Los Angeles, who just cut ties with Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, may attempt to get ahead of the Cardinals, who have the fourth pick and are in need of a receiver as well. Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., the top-ranked receiving prospect according to CBS Sports, is probably a target for both teams.
However, for the deal to be successful, the Commanders must believe that the quarterback they desire will be available at No. 5. They would need to be aware of the quarterback the Patriots intend to choose in order to do this.
Regardless of what happens, the quarterback conundrums should make for an interesting start to what should be an entertaining draft.
