While it is true that Corey Blackett-Taylor has been acclimatized to Derby County life quietly, that hasn’t been his fault.
The combination of the team’s performance and a bothersome hamstring issue that occurred shortly after his arrival has limited him to a small number of games, which has undoubtedly been frustrating. However, his Saturday cameo against Northampton provided enough evidence to indicate that he is prepared to make an impact on a club that is trying to make a run at the Championship.
A fan expressed this opinion on social media over the weekend, reposting a video of some of the goals he had scored for Charlton earlier in the season, which ultimately led Derby to pay £300,000 for the player back in January.
Some outstanding displays of his abilities were also evident, most notably the goal he scored against Wycombe in which he drove into the box and past two players before slanting the ball past the goalkeeper. With so many goals and assists on a subpar squad, it made you realize what a powerful force he was for Charlton, when he was considered by many to be among the finest wingers in the division.
Derby would undoubtedly appreciate the same type of impact at this moment, when the extent of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s hamstring injury is unknown and the fight for automatic promotion is still very much in play.
It does allow Warne to go back to a front three for the next three games at least, as Derby looks set to switch to a back four with the suspension of Sonny Bradley and the injury of Craig Forsyth. It looks to be the ideal chance for head coach Paul Warne to let the former Aston Villa winger loose for the matches where they’ll need quickness, creativity, and skill—especially if Mendez-Laing is out.
The performance against Northampton undoubtedly seemed to inspire Derby’s head coach, who responded that someone had to step up when asked if Blackett-Taylor should take the reins. It’s up to Blackett-Taylor to demonstrate his skill, as he clearly possesses it.
