Greg Joseph, vikings kicker, leaves…

Nearly two weeks after the Vikings allowed Joseph’s contract to expire, Joseph agreed to join with the Packers on Tuesday, according to his agent Brett Tessler. Ahead of what seems to be another kicking competition this summer with a likely drafted or undrafted player, Minnesota signed an inexperienced kicker, John Parker Romo. August is Joseph’s thirty-first birthday, and he has another tournament coming up. He becomes the third kicker on a Packers roster that also included Jack Podlesny and Anders Carlson. Carlson, the current starter and younger brother of former Vikings kicker Daniel Carlson, was selected by Green Bay in the sixth round of the 2023 draft. Joseph defeated Podlesny, a second-year kicker, in a competition with the Vikings last summer.

Joseph, a Florida Atlantic undrafted free agency from 2018, first came to Minnesota in 2021 as a replacement for seasoned kicker Dan Bailey. That July, he defeated Riley Patterson, a rookie at the time, to win the starting spot. Additionally, he triumphed in summer tournaments against Podlesny last year and Gabe Brkic in 2022. However, after Joseph finished 28th in field goal % in back-to-back seasons, the Vikings were prepared to move on. He made 36 of 38 extra-point attempts last year, which was a strong performance. However, just 80% of his field goals were made, with 7 of his 13 attempts coming from beyond 40 yards. Over the previous two seasons, he had kicked six game-winning field goals that put the Vikings ahead late in the fourth quarter or in overtime. He remained a reliable clutch player.
