According to a source in the United States, former Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Super Bowl victors.
Rees-Zammit made an impression while on the NFL’s international player pathway (IPP), and he is expected to join the Chiefs practice squad.
It is anticipated that the 23-year-old’s deal will be official on Friday, with his assigned positions being wide receiver and running back. The Irish quartet consisting of Darragh Leader, Charlie Smyth, Mark Jackson, and Rory Beggan participated in the IPP class and will also be waiting to see if they have accomplished enough to be considered for a deal.
Following his visits to multiple NFL teams, including the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos, Rees-Zammit made his decision.
His next objective is to earn a spot on the Chiefs’ final roster for the upcoming season, when he will compete to join fellow stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes in their quest for a third straight Super Bowl.
The Gloucester, Wales, and Lions wing shocked rugby fans in January when he announced his intention to give up the game in order to try and get a deal with an NFL team for 2024.
His impressive performance on last week’s pro day, which is a component of the international player pathway, brought that goal one step closer.
Rees-Zammit recorded times of 4.43 seconds for his broad jump (9 feet 7 inches) and vertical jump (29 inches).
