Report;Raiders trade up to get their quarterback

In his search for the future quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Antonio Pierce has stated that he is a go-getter and wants to be aggressive. In the 2024 mock NFL Draft presented by SB Nation, Las Vegas decides to take a chance and trades selections 13 and 77 to the Chicago Bears in exchange for No. 9, selecting Michael Penix Jr. of Washington.

Although it is anticipated that the Silver and Black will move up into the top three picks to presumably pursue Jayden Daniels, the New England Patriots, Washington Commanders, and Bears showed no signs of giving up. Thus, the first, second, and third overall picks were Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Daniels. The Minnesota Vikings then used their two first-round selections to acquire Arizona Cardinals in a trade.

Panic began to set in, and with four quarterbacks selected in the first four rounds and the quarterback-starved Denver Broncos sitting one slot ahead of the Raiders, something had to be done. Chicago was prepared to pass on the No. 9 pick, and Las Vegas only needed a third-round selection to land the franchise’s quarterback of the future.

The Raiders only overspent by five points, therefore this was a fairly balanced deal according to the NFL draft pick trade value chart. A minor increase to cover the cost of the most crucial spot on the field.

This selection also slightly defies the odds, as a quarterback (+275) is listed as the third-best option for the Silver and Gold, behind offensive lineman (+140) and cornerback (+175).

More importantly, Penix is a pick that the late Al Davis would certainly approve of. Davis always had an affinity for the vertical passing attack and the former Husky has one of the strongest arms in this year’s draft class. He’s more than capable of bombing the ball down the field, which is also a big piece of new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s offense.
