What will UConn women’s basketball team look like in Future

Iowa stunned the Huskies with their incredible postseason run on Friday night in the Final Four. Even though UConn is disappointed right now, the setback motivates them to return to the national semifinals the next year.

The bulk of UConn’s roster, including 2024 All-American Paige Bueckers and injured shooting standout Azzi Fudd, is anticipated to return for the upcoming season.

Even if the Huskies’ three injury-plagued seasons have taught them to lower their expectations for the future, it doesn’t harm to speculate about what UConn might look like in 2024–2025.

After this season, current seniors Aliyah Edwards and Nika Mühl will graduate and start their professional careers. Edwards is predicted to be selected in the top five in the WNBA Draft on April 15.

Three freshman will be joining UConn, led by Sarah Strong, the top recruit in the Class of 2024, who recently committed. Last Saturday, Strong committed to UConn, bringing the team’s total scholarship count to 15. But now that Amari DeBerry and Inês Bettencourt left the squad on Monday, there are two seats available if the team wants to add one or more players through the portal.

Sneak peek at UConn women’s basketball’s 2024-25 roster:

Aubrey Griffin: Prior to suffering an ACL injury on January 3 that ended her season, Griffin was anticipated to depart this season in order to start her professional career. The sixth-best player for the Huskies is back for her sixth season next year, making history as the first athlete to play for six seasons under Geno Auriemma.

Paige Buckers, the main player for the Husky team, comes back for her fifth season with the Storrs after having a stellar year in which she played power forward rather than point guard this season. Two-time All-American Bueckers was once again a candidate for National Player of the Year. She does have one more year of eligibility after next year, but in the 2025 WNBA Draft, it is anticipated that she will be selected first overall.

Azzi Fudd – Not everything about Fudd’s stay in Storrs has gone as planned. Since joining the Storrs in 2021, the shooting star has not yet participated in a full, healthy season of play. She was limited to just two games this season due to a knee injury that ended her season. She will be a tremendous help to Bueckers in carrying the scoring load for UConn if she can maintain her health.

Caroline Ducharme – Due to injuries, Ducharme’s collegiate career has also had a difficult beginning. Due to recurrent head/neck problems, the 6-foot-2 guard only played in four games this season after missing more than two months of play due to a concussion last year. She declared at the end of January that she would miss the rest of the 2023–24 season in order to concentrate on recovering so that she could participate in 2024–25.

Ice Brady – Brady had a solid debut year playing as Edwards’ backup. The forward missed all last year with a knee injury but rose up off the bench when her team needed her, especially with Edwards out in the Big East Tournament. If Brady can continue growing her confidence and foul less, she could compete for a starting spot.
