On April 20, Oregon State University and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold their yearly Out of the Darkness campus walk.
The ceremony for the honor beads takes place at noon, and the walk starts at 10 a.m. This year’s walk has Black Joy as its theme.
On the event webpage, there is a donation option in addition to free registration.
According to Kayleigh Franca, the student lead for this event, “hope activities” and a resource fair will be held in SEC Plaza beginning at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. after that, and Chanale Propst and Ireti DeBato-Cancel, the directors for Black and African American Mental Health and Wellness at OSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services, will give a speech about this year’s theme. Additionally, concerts by Rian Gayle and Anderson Dubois are scheduled.
These Out of the Darkness treks, according to Franca, are intended to include children and young adults in the battle against suicide, which is the third most common cause of death for those between the ages of 15 and 24.
Franca highlighted the honor bead ceremony that will take place during the live programming. These honor beads are color coded to signify your connection to the cause; participants display their beads together showing each other that no one is alone.
