If Derby County defeats Cambridge United tomorrow, the League One promotion race will come down to a thrilling finish, and they will have one foot in the Championship.
Two seasons after being demoted in one of the worst periods in the team’s history, the Rams just need four points from their next two games to guarantee their return to the second division.
Under new manager Garry Monk, Paul Warne’s team will be hoping to complete a significant portion of the task at the Abbey, where the United States are still vulnerable to relegation. Here’s the most recent update from the treatment table as we get closer to the game.
Callum Elder
The Australian defender is back fit again having trained all week. Whether he will be deployed at Cambridge from the start remains to be seen. He should be in the squad however.
Joe Ward
Ward had to come off in the second half of the 2-2 draw at Portsmouth after picking up a knock to his knee. Unfortunately, his season is over after he underwent surgery in midweek. Warne said he faces two months on the sidelines.
Max Bird
Bird has trained all week and will be competing for a place in the squad at the Abbey Stadium before he leaves for Bristol City in the summer.
Dwight Gayle
The striker limped out of the win over Bolton in the first half and was subsequently sent for a scan. Faces a race against time to be fit for the last game of the season.
Craig Forsyth
The defender was feared to be out for the rest of the season after another calf problem, but the long-serving Scot is improving. Warne said last week that his return was imminent.
Ryan Nyambe
The Namibia international has been ruled out for the season after injuring his quad in the game against Charlton. He has undergone surgery and unfortunately, that is his campaign over with.
Tyreece John-Jules
The on-loan Arsenal forward, who injured his hamstring against Reading back in January, will return to Derby for training next week after being given the green light by the Gunners after there were no setbacks with his rehab. Warne did not rule him out of playing some part against Carlisle.
Jake Rooney
The centre-back sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage in the defeat to Bolton in September, but is making surprisingly good progress. Is set to undergo another scan on his knee and once all clear, could be back involved with some of the first-team training.
