An international star’s hammer injury will keep Leeds United’s promotion rivals Southampton out of the picture until 2025.
Gavin Bazunu, an Ireland international and first-choice keeper, hurt himself during the warm-up before Tuesday night’s Championship match at home against Preston North End. Southampton has now disclosed that Bazunu suffered an Achilles tendon rupture.
The 22-year-old, who has played every minute of this season in goal, is now anticipated to miss nine or ten months.
According to Saints manager Russell Martin, “Gavin had an operation yesterday,” on the team’s official website. It was just as horrible as we had anticipated since he had torn his Achilles tendon. He’ll be sidelined for approximately nine to ten months.
“I had previously spoken with him.”
“Over the next ten months, Gavin will experience some dark and lonely moments following a significant setback. We’ll work with him and avoid him.”
Before being replaced in goal by seasoned 34-year-old keeper Alex McCarthy against Preston, Bazunu had participated in every minute of every league game. With a game remaining, Southampton’s 3-0 victory moved them to within just three points of Leeds, who are in third place.
