Regarding whether Emi Martinez, the goalkeeper for Aston Villa, will serve a suspension for the Europa Conference League semi-final, there is a great deal of uncertainty. As Villa defeated Lille in a penalty shootout to get to the competition’s final four, the goalie found himself in an odd scenario.
Martinez received two bookings from the referee: one during the game and another during the penalty shootout. A unique regulation, however, kept the World Cup winner from being sent off. This keeps the second yellow from turning into a red.
Journalist Matt Maher of Express & Star says there’s a “fair bit of confusion” surrounding the incident. He made a post on X: “Deleted post on Martinez’s suspension from the semifinals last night since there is a
“I’m not sure what the referee is asking of me. I asked the ball guy for a ball because there was no ball on the penalty spot during the shootout, and I was immediately booked! I simply don’t know what the regulations are.”
After the game, fans questioned manager Unai Emery about whether or not he and his team believed Martinez had been sent off. In response, he said, “Yes. But that is how the rules are. You could see that throughout the game, since yesterday you [the media] were all asking me about the reception he will have here in France.
“He was trying to manage his emotions, but the supporters were pressuring him, despite his experience. He is mature yet still has a personality, and I think well of him. He’s
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which is in charge of drafting the game’s laws, is ultimately the decision-maker. Normally, a player receives two yellow cards to make a red card, which results in their dismissal and one-match suspension. However, this is where IFAB regulation 10 is relevant.
It states: “Kicks from the penalty mark (KFPM) are not carried over into warnings and cautions (YCs) issued during the match, even during extra time. A player is not dismissed if they obtain a yellow card during the KFPM as well as the game.”
Robin Olsen will probably take Martinez’s spot in the semi-final if he is really suspended. The 34-year-old Swede only has 13 appearances for Villa after moving from Roma in 2022.
