Even now, Peter Crouch chuckles when he recalls how, while actually eating a McDonald’s burger, Sky Sports News reported that he was flying to Stoke City in a helicopter.
Crouch, 43, played for numerous Premier League teams, but his £12 million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Stoke City in 2011 was one of his most well-known movements. Given that Crouch was still frequently mentioned when discussing England and appeared to be the ideal addition to Tony Pulis’ squad, the move was especially thrilling.
The thought of the 6′ 7″ attacker snagging one of Rory Delap’s enticing long throws had fans salivating. The situation escalated further when Sky Sports reported that he wasn’t eating a quarter-pounder like Joe Bloggs upon his arrival in Staffordshire, but rather, he was coming in a James Bond-like fashion.
He remarked on his renowned podcast, “That Peter Crouch Podcast,” saying, “I remember sitting in a Maccies and using my phone to watch Sky Sports News.”
“It was breaking news with the yellow bar, [it said] ‘Peter Crouch has been spotted in a helicopter landing at a golf club near Stoke’. And I was sitting there with a quarter-pounder on a target roundabout.”
Crouch looks back at the transfer saga with a smile. But the experienced striker said the handling of the move was “nasty”.
