Hannah Stuelke, a sophomore forward for Iowa, had a career night on Thursday when the Hawkeyes defeated Penn State, scoring 47 points. It was a new Carver-Hawkeye Arena single-game record. Caitlin Clark and Kate Davis both had double-doubles at the end of the match.
On Thursday night, Hannah Stuelke of Iowa asked Caitlin Clark to step down. With a career-high 47 points and a 111-93 victory over Penn State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the sophomore forward sought to break her own mark.
Stuelke now holds the record for the most points scored in a single game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena after that incredible evening. She scored 47 points, setting a new standard for women’s and men’s basketball.
Not only did Stuelke score a lot of points, but she was also very productive that evening. She made 17 of her 20 field goals and 13 of her 21 free throw attempts.
With nine rebounds, the sophomore forward was just one rebound short of a double-double.
“I find it to be very cool. After the game, Stuelke remarked, “It’s just amazing that I’m the one the little girls look up to. I remember watching Megan (Gustafson) and watching her score so many points.”
Stuelke narrowly missed becoming the first Iowa women’s basketball player to record the most points in a game with two points. With 48, Gustafson continues to hold the record.
Clark had a solid night for Iowa, as well. She finished the game with 27 points and 15 assists in the victory. Kate Martin was sensational, posting a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
It was one of the most complete efforts from the Hawkeyes this season. And even though there was a lot of praise to go around, Stuelke was the one who deserved the most attention.
“I think that’s what everyone’s been waiting for,” Clark said of Stuelke’s career night. “She’s had glimpses of being really, really great like that, but we all know how good she is.
“I’m just proud of her. She works so hard, she’s put in so much time, especially this summer. Been dealing with a little bit of a knee injury. To come out here and play like that, it’s exactly what we needed.”
