After kicking Ethan Brooks during Saturday’s Orlando Pirates victory over AmaZulu FC, Patrick Maswanganyi was given a yellow card.
On the other side, Relebohile Mofokeng, his teammate, was lucky not to receive a booking after using his hand to strike goalie Glen Baadjies during Bucs’ game against the Hungry Lions on March 16.
Referee of the Season for the 2011–12 PSL, Victor Hlungwani, has examined the rules of the game in great detail and stated unequivocally that the Pirates pair ought to have been sent off.
WHAT WAS SAID?
“Maswanganyi kicked an opponent when not challenging for the ball,” Hlungwani said on SoccerZone.
“What does the law say? The law says this is violent conduct. The player must be sent off.
“So, Maswanganyi survived here. A red card should have been issued against Maswanganyi,” the retired match official continued.
“The same thing as the other one, Mofokeng hit another player with his hand.
“So, when not challenging for the ball, you can’t do this. You do this [and] you are risking getting a red card.”
