Brian Ferentz, a former offensive coordinator for Iowa football, is joining the staff of another Big Ten school.
According to two reports—one from Pat Harty of Hawk Fanatic and another from Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports—Ferentz is going to be an analyst for the Maryland Terrapins.
Maryland had an 8-5 (4-5 Big Ten) record at the end of the 2023 season.
After the 2023 college football season, Ferentz was let go from his position as Iowa’s offensive coordinator. Over the course of his final seasons as Iowa’s offensive coordinator, the Hawkeyes’ offense turned into a national laughingstock.
In terms of overall offense, Iowa finished dead last in the FBS in 2023 and second-to-worst in 2022. In terms of scoring offense (15.4 points per game) in the 2023 campaign, the Hawkeyes were ranked No. 132 as well. That number was the second-to-last in the country.
Ferentz was a center and offensive guard for the Hawkeyes before he became a coach. Ferentz signed free agent contracts with the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints after being left off of the 2006 NFL draft.
In 2008, Ferentz joined the New England Patriots as a scouting assistant before starting his coaching career. Ferentz eventually rose through the ranks at the Patriots, first as an offensive assistant and later as the tight ends coach.
Ferentz returned to Iowa City as the Hawkeyes’ offensive line coach from 2012-14. He added the run game coordinator title during the 2015-16 seasons. Then, Ferentz served as the Hawkeyes’ offensive coordinator from 2017-23.
After Ferentz’s dismissal, Iowa hired former Western Michigan head coach and Green Bay Packers analyst Tim Lester as its new offensive coordinator heading into the 2024 college football season.
