Amorim to stay at Sporting after Liverpool

Fans of Sporting CP may be assured that Ruben Amorim will stay on as the team’s coach for the upcoming campaign.

The Portuguese strategist had conversations with West Ham last month and was linked to Liverpool after Jürgen Klopp announced his departure.

After Sporting won the Portuguese league on Sunday with two games remaining, Amorim made the following statement: “I stay, I have a contract with Sporting.” I dedicate this league victory to every Sporting supporter out there. We will now attempt to win a third [domestic league championship since he assumed leadership].”

The 39-year-old Amorim had already stated that he could not promise to stay at Sporting for the upcoming campaign.

At the helm of Sporting since March 2020, he has a contract with the Lisbon outfit until June 2026 with a €20 million ($21m) release clause set for foreign clubs.

After just one season, Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres is unable to guarantee he would stay with the team past this summer.

After a €21 million transfer from Coventry City last summer, the Swedish international has drawn interest from Premier League and La Liga teams, scoring 27 goals and setting up nine more in 31 league outings.

“Stay next season? This is football, it’s normal, I can’t promise anything,” Gyökeres said. “I would like to stay, I really like being here, I wouldn’t mind, but in football everything happens very quickly and we have to adapt. I can’t make so many predictions, it’s difficult, there are still games left this season, then we’ll see.”

Gyökeres, 25, under contract with Sporting until June 2028, has a €90m release clause.
