A R30 million price tag ruins the deal for Kaizer Chiefs

Five-time According to sources in South Africa, the high asking price of R30 million (about £1.3 million) for Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is keeping South African Premier Soccer League winners Kaizer Chiefs at bay.

Since his heroics at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept four clean sheets and almost lost out on the Golden Glove to South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as Nigeria lost the final to Ivory Coast, Nwabali has been the subject of transfer rumors.

Although he has been linked to moves in Europe and Saudi Arabia, the Chippa United keeper is reportedly being eyed by the Chiefs, a local rival team, but they are deterred by his high price tag.

“Nwabali’s high price tag of R30 million is said to be the reason Kaizer Chiefs, who previously showed a lot of interest in him, are said to have backed out of any possible deal. But considering the uncertainty surrounding Itumeleng Khune’s future, Amakhosi should think about investing in players like Nwabali if they are truly serious to turning around their team and adding noteworthy quality to it, as Goal.com writer Celine Abrahams pointed out.”In light of this, adding one or more players to the negotiation could be a smart move for Chiefs to win over Chippa if the price tag is too high.”The fact that eight of the Chiefs’ players have contracts that expire at the end of the current campaign may make their position more challenging.
Nwabali is contracted to Chippa United through 2026, and Siviwe Mpengesi, the owner of the Chilli Boys, has publicly acknowledged that negotiations are still ongoing, especially with foreign teams, over their goalkeeper.
In the past, Mpengesi reaffirmed that the squad would entertain bids from Premier Soccer League sides and that they wouldn’t prevent Nwabali from leaving should the offers be sufficiently alluring. The 27-year-old is also connected to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, and Queens Park Rangers in England.
In 22 PSL games this season, the goalie has 10 clean sheets to his name.
