My question at the time of Luis Guillorme’s signing was straightforward: Why? Except for foul balls hit against the Atlanta Braves, he was below average in every offensive and defensive category. Sure, he had tormented the Braves multiple times during regular season games while he was a Met. Now, I would have been fine if Guillorme had only had one MiLB option. He didn’t. The Guillorme deal actually didn’t make sense, as David Fletcher was guaranteed a salary and it would count against the CBT regardless of what happened. Apparently, Alex Anthopoulos now concurs.
This also sets up the following trade, with the Braves acquiring Zack Shortpara from the Red Sox. In 2024, Short is scheduled to play for three different MLB teams. Throughout his MLB career, Short has played both infield and outfield, and he will most likely cover a variety of positions in an emergency. He will take Guillorme’s place directly because he has no other options, and ideally they will like him.
