From the beginning of the game, Sundowns controlled the game while Royal AM was pinned back. After 41 minutes, Peter Shalulile scored with an incredible overhead kick in the six-yard box, defying the home team’s defensive posture. Hugo Nyame was unable to hold onto a Lesiba Nku shot, which resulted in a rebound and the goal. This gave Rhulani Mokwena’s team a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Sundowns carried over their first half’s energy into the second stanza, attacking and establishing their superiority. Their perseverance paid off when Nku doubled their lead with a skillfully performed shot that defeated Nyame.
In the dying moments of the game, Sundowns were awarded a penalty, but Marcelo Allende’s attempt sailed over the crossbar.
Now that they have won 2-0, Sundowns can break the PSL points record for most points earned in a 30-game season with just one more win. In the meantime, Royal AM is now two points ahead of Richards Bay in the relegation play-off position and is ranked 14th in the league.
Credit goes to Nku, who not only scored a spectacular goal but also made a vital contribution to Sundowns’ offense during the game by setting up opportunities for his side.
Thwihli Thwahla did not threaten Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango, who had a peaceful evening in goal.
Even though they were playing at home, they failed to take advantage of their set-piece opportunities and were unable to capitalize.
Before the season ends, the Brazilians have three league games left. On Saturday, May 18, they take on Stellenbosch, who are ranked second. On Tuesday, May 21, they play TS Galaxy, and on May 25, they play Cape Town City.
Then, on June 1st, they will play Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final.
