This offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders have received a lot of criticism for their lack of significant quarterback activity. In the 2024 NFL Draft, Las Vegas did not select a quarterback of the future; however, the team did sign Gardner Minshew in free agency.
That means that Aidan O’Connell, a 2023 fourth-round pick who showed some potential last year but is essentially a wild card, and Minshew, who signed a two-year, $25 million deal this summer, will compete for the starting spot.
The fact that both of these quarterbacks have strong supporting groups, particularly in terms of pass catchers, is one of their advantages. That might enable Minshew reach a higher level than what we’ve seen from him in the past, and if O’Connell makes that next move, he might also succeed.According to John Kosko of Pro Football Focus, the Raiders’ quarterbacks room is the worst in the NFL as a result of their current circumstances. This is his opinion:
To say that the Raiders’ quarterbacks room is the worst in the NFL would be unfair. In the end, Minshew and O’Connell ought to be adequate at most, and teams have triumphed in far worse circumstances than the Raiders’ present one.
That’s not to suggest that Las Vegas is in a bad situation or anything, but let’s just say that it’s not ideal.
In addition to all of that, rookies may be starting for multiple clubs. Until those rookies demonstrate that they are superior to either of the two Raiders signal-callers, it’s difficult to declare any of those rooms greater than Las Vegas’.
Could things in Las Vegas be better under center? Granted, but it would be unfair to describe the Raiders’ quarterback room as the worst in the NFL.
